nexus-6p-G7I was anyways working on describing the new Nexus 6p and reviewing every detail. But I have recently bumped into an annoying issue which seems to be also affecting our fellow Nexus 6P users across the globe. I came across an article describing the problem in Austrailia with a particular network provider.

It is very irritating to find your super powerful phone which supposedly Premium but fails to connect and use cellular data.

If you are on a Wi Fi network and suddenly step out its range it does not seamlessly start using the Cellular Data. It may very well appear like the issue where your phone has suddenly slipped into a Roaming zone and you had switched off the Roaming cellular Data option.

Workaround

The main solution would be to restart your phone or ensure you are disconnecting from the GSM network and re-connecting. I painfully spent the first few days restarting my phone again and again. To add to my pain it never worked in one restart.

I found something really simple & easy to achieve the same and it would be going into Airplane Mode for 5 seconds and returning back to the active mode. This move facilitates the re-connection of the GSM network.

BTW Google are already aware of the issue and are working on delivering an OTA update with the fix after testing is complete.

You won’t really notice how discretely data is exchanged between your electronic device and the ‘others’ on the internet. Those apps installed on your iPhone—factory or third party, skim information out of your smartphone, just like a pickpocket would do that with your cash, even if it’s resting inside your purse, safely.

Technology’s convenience comes with the setbacks of its own, and there is nothing more disappointing than to lose your personal photos, videos or chats to some third party app. But if you don’t want that to happen with your kids or employee, you can take help from an app.

Different people require different layers of digital safety. For someone like me would be fine with any third party app accessing my phone’s cache, as there isn’t much inside my iPhone, but for someone like my daughter, there is another world that resides inside her smartphone—an unrealistic fancy world of fables and collages. Digital safety is important for kids like her. To protect your devices against digital theft, the only solution is to never keep anything personal onto your device that you may regret losing to someone else. But what will you do when it comes to safeguarding devices that are not under your control?

From our family to our offices, every electronic device requires some software or hardware for its protection. Well you won’t really have to care about dissemination of data from your kids’ or employees’ iPhone or iPads, if you know that there isn’t anything peculiar stored on their devices.  For that you needs and03 iPhone spying app, like XNSPY, that can be installed onto any iOS device, running OS 6.0 or higher, so you can always check what’s saved inside your kids’ or employees’ smartphone.

You can’t only lose data to apps, but to anyone, to whom you lose your device. So under any such circumstance of stolen or lost smartphone, you can make sure your personal information stays with you. (Read on to know what you can do about it)

XNSPY Remote Control

The Remote Control feature by XNSPY makes sure that you are always ready to wipe data off your device, in any case of losing your iPhone. To make this work, you will be required to install XNSPY onto the target device. After that, you will have remote access to the target device; using XNSPY’s online webpage based Control Panel. If you are worried about strangers titillating your kids on social media networks, you can make sure that they stay away from their devices at night with XNSPY’s Remote lock feature.

XNSPY is available for a price of $8.33/month. But that Remote Control is not just what you are paying for. The app also lets you spy on:

  • Phone logs: calls, SMS, emails, internet browsing history, phonebook, calendar entries.
  • Social media apps: Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber, Line, Skype, Kik and iMessage.
  • Gallery: Photos, videos and audio.
  • Real-Time location: GPS tracking and Geo-fencing.

For social media apps, you can access chats, call logs and multimedia shared on these aforementioned apps. Geo-fencing makes sure that your kids or employees stay within a certain geographical boundary.

iPhone spying app like XNSPY is really handy to minimize the collateral of internet abuse.

Screenshot - DU Battery Saver

It has been a while since I’ve hit a sweet spot in the configuration of app configurations & power settings of my LG Nexus 4 to stay alive for nearly 24 hours without a single recharge or at least a complete working day without a recharge. Smartphones are the key to all our interactions and communications. There is a mix of some obvious steps which I will address last and some really cool apps which helped me hit this configuration.

1. DU Battery Saver – App
screenshot du battery saver

This one takes care of majority of the hassle. It helps you set modes which you can switch to, like General or Sleep. You can also create your own custom modes. You can optimize based on the following:-

  • Screen BrightnessScreenshot - DU Battery Saver
  • Screen Timeout
  • Vibrate
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • Mobile Data
  • Sync
  • Haptic Feedback

It helps you monitor the number of charges you have performed in a calendar format with a breakdown of Regular and Healthy charges. Charges are classified as healthy when the phone is charged from below 20% to above 75%.

One of the key instant features is the OPTIMIZE button, this magical button comes up with all of the following.

  • Saver Recommendations – Apps which are power consuming and are currently running
  • Paid Functions: Like Advance Saving / Automatic Cleaning
  • Manual Power Options which tinker around with Screen Brightness, Screen timeout, Sync settings etc. , and bring them to an optimum power saving level

On hitting OPTIMIZE, you have the App doing what it thinks is best for your phone like Shutting down application, switching off the Bluetooth and so on. It is a quick clutter free escape to an energy saving haven.

Head to the Play Store here to download the app and give it a try.

2. WiFi Power Saver App

Wifi Power Saver has a very reliable WIFI connection timeout policy controlled by a configurable number of minutes you can time it out. If the connection times out, it automatically switches off the WiFi. Also, when the WiFi has been switched off, it comes up with a notification. An optional tap on the notification switches back the WiFi if required. This is it, nothing more to say, this simply can work wonders for your power guzzling phone.

3. AutomateIt

automateIt

AutomateIt Rules

I was not satisfied with the above two solutions, and went on looking for something more complicated. I landed up with AutomateIt which is quite a handy app to automate majority of your daily mundane tasks.

It is based on a very simple concept

  • Trigger
  • Action
  • Rule

Example : I would like to see my WiFi come on automatically if I am looking at the turned on screen. The recipe may sound complicated, but it is very easy with all the self explanatory icons available .

  • Trigger : Device Screen is turned on
  • Action : Set Wi-Fi Adapter to Wi-Fi Enabled

Coming to the power saving bit, one of the key recipes would be as follows :

automateIT(Obviously when you knock off to bed at night, you rather not be disturbed or it is certainly not a time you would like to use the WiFi, why not turn it off)

  • Trigger : Triggers on 00:00, every day
  • Action : Set Wi-Fi adapter status to Wi-Fi Enabled

Similarly you can switch back on in the morning at 06:00. There are plenty of other such rules available in the rules market which can be downloaded from the Rules Market. Enjoy all of them.

This has extended by battery life by a nearly a couple of hours. Enjoy the difference ! Please do not forget to share your suggestions and ideas.

Nexus 9

Google Nexus 9 is a refreshing new figure in the tablet arena from the HTC – Google collaborative stable. There are few points which may give the conviction that this is indeed a good buy or may be just another model in the market. Well here are some of the points. We have drawn references to newly launched iPad Air 2 cause the Apple factory has so far been the market leaders in this space, worth enough to be considered as a benchmark

4G LTE connectivity

One of the least significant point to me, would be that the 32GB version of the tablet is LTE-compliant. This suggests that it will be support 4G-LTE connectivity.

Thickness

HTC Nexus 9 is thicker compared to the new launched iPad Air 2 at 7.9mm. The new launched Air 2 is 18% thinner than its own predecessor. Again I would not mind this one, sinceI would prefer something substantial in my hands.

Display

The iPad Air 2 uses a 9.7in IPS display with resolution of 2048 x 1536 and a pixels per inch (ppi) density of 264. A resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels (2K) and a 4:3 aspect ratio has been offered by the Nexus 9 with a higher ppi of 281. The Nexus 9 uses an 8.9in IPS display with resolution of 1536 x 2048 and a slightly higher 281pp. Hence the resolution is identical but the Nexus edges out Apple in terms of pixel density. Display has always been the key factor of the Apple, and it is great to see a key competitor covering a lot of ground to match it in this area. The dimensions are 240 x 169.5mm of the iPad Air 2, versus 228.2 x 153.7mm of the Nexus 9.

Camera

The iPad Air 2 brings along with it an 8 megapixel (MP) camera with additional low-light capability and additional features like burst mode, slow-motion, face-detection, exposure compensation, and autofocus. There’s a 1.3MP camera up front for video calls. In comparison to Apple, the HTC Nexus 9 uses an 8MP rear camera with back-illuminated sensor, autofocus, and LED flash. It has a 1.6MP front-facing camera for video calls. Both iPad & Nexus are capable of recording Full HD video at 30 frames per second.

Boom Sound

boom sound   Now this feature seemed to be very significant to me and definitely seems to be a stand out in front of other competitors, the Boom Sound presented by the HTC family.

 What is Boom Sound ?

74 percent of people in a survey in the US said they were more than delighted with the speaker quality of the HTC One, which was significantly higher to the  iPhone 5, figure of 34 percentage points,     according to market-research firm GFK. Now this very same feature has been introduced in the Nexus 9 device, it boasts of two front-facing speakers. With sound being directional, it makes obvious   sense to place them in the front, something which has strangely eluded many other manufacturers in the past. Boom Sound uses the concept of bigger sound chambers backed with an amplifier to power  the sound with minimum distortion

It is not just loud, but there is an equal focus on clarity where the software kicks on the basis of the usage like music, video or calls.

Body

The body is part aluminium, something which may not appease everybody.

Google Now Voice

The Nexus 9 presents an a
dditional ability of Lollipop to allow access to Google Now voice commands even when the display is down. User’s can simply speak and the table will respond accordingly.

Battery Life

N9 promises battery life of up to 9.5 hours for media and WiFi browsing with standby times of up to 30 days.

Under the hood

Android L has moved from Project Dalvik to ART (Android Run time). Dalvik is a virtual machine used for executing applications in the past versions of Android. In simple terms we now have  faster virtual machine that compiles apps once instead of, on every run. ART is faster and efficient than Dalvik, which means drops in processing time and subsequent drops in power utilization. Google Android versions has been all about projects which have key changes which improve the overall experience with every release.  Jelly Bean had Project Butter where Android’s UI animations were targetted to run at 60fps.  Kitkat had Project Svelte, which ensures the OS runs only on 512MB of RAM.

In the newly release Android L we have “Project Volta,” a concentrated effort of improving the battery life of Android devices. Android L has a new Job Scheduler which ensures that anything and everything does not wake up when the screen comes alive and majority of the activity is restricted to when the device is plugged in or has proper connectivity. Adding to the plethora of changes is the new battery stat tracker known as “Battery Historian.”

Keyboard Dock

N9A separate keyboard dock will be available for the Nexus 9, certainly not something new in the tablet market. The
dock has a magnetic attachment and a folding design that allows users to position their Nexus 9  in two possible angles. I wonder how much will this be used, and the actual productivity, as it can only be used for emails or may be gaming. It is currently priced at  £110 on the UK Google Play Store, which is quite a lot for a Bluetooth paired accessory.

Graphics

64-bit Tegra K1 is one of the key features which adds to the Advanced GPU arsenal, which is adopted from PC equivalents. This alongwith 2GB of RAM serves to produce a quality 3D performance, this easliy beats Apple’s A8 experience.

Garmin Vivofit

Well after a lot of thought and market research, pretty much something I do for every major gadget purchase. I have finally decided I am going in for Garmin Vivofit. This is something I said on the 18th April 2014, a Good Friday I was spending away from home. But this is how the hunt ended, but the hunt started very differently.

My first preference was honestly the Fitbit Force, which a close friend of mine purchased while he

Fitbit Force

Fitbit Force

was on a business trip to America, he fought quite a few snow storms to get to the store to find only one available there. Hence he obviously kept it for himself. Well I kept waiting for it for quite some time to be launched in the UK, but it never got launched. Unfortunately a market leader like the Fitbit Force had to wind up it sales in February 2014 with a voluntary recall in accordance with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. This recall did take place because of  several users complaining of rash and irritation. According to James Park, CEO of Fitbit, nearly 1.7% of the users complained of this skin irritation. This was followed up with an apology, then a statement for a voluntary recall with complete direct refund to all consumers.

Fitbit-Flex-Wireless-Activity-Tracker

Fitbit Flex

Fitbit Flex, was never even in the reckoning, it did not count floors, did not have a display, did not have a display of for time (certainly when I wanted to substitute my watch), and biggest drawback needed to be charged every five days, which sounded silly to me.  That was the end of the Fitbit story for me.

Over to find out why the Nike FuelBand did not make the cut. The first thing I spotted was the battery life, just a meagre 7 days, which was again a complete turn off. Something which was like a massive NO in my face was the fact that it does support Android Phones, which did not make sense. An international brand like Nike completely ignoring Android users felt very out of touch.

This band lacks vibration alerts and sleep tracking and does really provide an in depth picture with all the stats it is gathering.

Modern object oriented softwares are complex and hence there is scope of misuse of language features. Even experienced developers can inadvertently write error-prone code. Software is an integral part of the service and application industry. If one were to deploy defective code, it can easily cause huge monetary losses.

Projects can have millions of lines of code and hence a manual review or test of the complete source code can take a long time [5]. Automated bug detection explores all possible program behaviors and hence is not limited by the lines of code or the quality of test cases.

So what is static analysis?

Static code analysis is an analysis of software code without actually executing it. These tools look for a specific set of patterns or rules in the software code or bytecode, very similar to how antivirus programs search for viruses. They try to detect bug patterns which are nothing but  error-prone coding practices [4].

Some common issues that this analysis can uncover are –

  • Concurrency issues
  • Unchecked method return values
  • Unused fields and constants
  • Mutable static data
  • Null pointer dereferences

On the contrary, in dynamic analysis we actually execute the programs and check the execution for inconsistencies [1]. It is worth noting that most warnings do not indicate actual bugs. Hence these tools also categorize and prioritize the results to help the developer make the final decision [ 6, 11].

How can we use automation to conduct static analysis?

Commonly used tools to analyse software codes in the industry are –

FindBugs uses byte code analysis to implement bug detectors. Simple analysis is used to recognize over 300 types of programming mistakes and dubious coding idioms [2].

PMD performs syntactic checks on program source code and is more suited to checking stylistic rules than for checking low-level code features such as access to fields [3].

Jlint checks the given java byte code and finds bugs, inconsistencies and synchronization problems by performing data flow analysis and building lock graph [1].

How can static analysis be used in the industry?

Static analysis is becoming an industry standard and Google has even incorporated FindBugs into its standard testing and code-review process, fixing more than 1,000 issues in its internal code base [4]

Static analysis can be used in conjunction with data mining and provide interesting applications. For example, analyzing code and bug fixes from different revisions can reveal which warning categories are most important [6]. Such an analysis can also be used to distinguish between good and bad source code [3]. This knowledge can be leveraged in the future for improving the quality of source codes over a period of time. It can also provides developers guidance during the initial phases of software development.

According to the evaluation done by the creators of FindBugs, the code written in undergraduate courses is often buggy, which illustrates the role of tools in steering novices towards correct use of difficult language features [2]

On a concluding note, although these tools are very effective, they may still miss out on detecting some violations. The tools are only as effective as the rules they use to scan the code. [7]

In today’s competitive environment, organizations strive to search for ways to enhance their IT functionalities. As a result, they move towards outsourcing different platforms and infrastructure through the public cloud, and at the same time maintaining sensitive data in private clouds. Cloud computing has given several enterprises the edge. It allows these businesses to be more productive in the way they do things. As a result, this option creates a cost-efficient alternative as compared to purchasing and maintaining an infrastructure for keeping data.

The trend these days involves people focusing more on the core competencies of their company, instead of spending money on purchasing hardware. They have shifted to a view of thinking that believes IT services are more of a commodity which can be bought from the cloud.

The Benefits Offered By Cloud Services

  • It has a good future. According to studies, it is expected that the revenue created by the cloud market is expected to increase at 36% CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) by the end of 2016.
  • Cloud technology is elastic. This is advantageous considering the fact that data can either grow or shrink.
  • Rather than purchasing and owning it, cloud services can be rented. Because of this, it is possible to avoid big investment expenditures.

There is no doubt that cloud technology has played a big role in the IT industry. It is even referred to as a natural evolution in the field of Information Technology. Still, within the technology itself, there is a battle between two kinds of platforms, Private and Public Clouds. What are the differences? Which is better?

Public Cloud

A public cloud is composed of a service, or a group of services purchased by an organization or a business through the Internet by means of a third party provider. These kinds of services use processor power and storage capacity, which is not really owned by the organization itself. These facilities are either owned by the vendor itself, or a third party cloud infrastructure.

Private Cloud

A private cloud is generally the extension of the organization or business’ data center. It is used to provide processor power and storage capacity for different functions. As a matter of fact, being ‘private’ means more than just being a ‘non-shared’ resource. It also provides extra security advantage to an organization.

Considerations between Public and Private Clouds

Both types of cloud platforms have implications, management wise. However, whichever type is selected by a business means a significant offload in management responsibility.

In a public cloud environment, the capital expenditure is nearly completely eliminated. The burden is diverted to a fee-for-service, which is often based on data volume and utilization. Securing and maintaining a public cloud infrastructure lies in the hands of the vendor, thus enabling the organization to streamline their IT operations, and at the same time minimizing money and time used on the upkeep of the system.

In a private cloud environment, there is a huge demand on resources, which are used to purchase, specify, update, house, safeguard, and maintain the infrastructure itself. This can create a big initial capital expenditure, along with subsequent investment, which is required in adding new capacity and equipment.

As of this point, there is still a persistent concern about security. Professionals in the IT industry are confident and have placed their trust in the cloud service providers as they show a great amount of security and transparency in their services. Bottom line is, this technology is relatively new, considering its existence in the industry since its conception. There are still a lot of things that can be expected from it, and different enterprises are eagerly waiting for such enhancements to finally surface and create an impact in the way their businesses are handled.

Google has kept adding quality and quantity into the technology space. Nexus is a testimony to the fact. Focusing completely on Nexus 4, I know I am jumping the gun with respect to a detail that many other reviewers would often jump to last. However I simply cannot resist, in plain damn simple words, the phone is very attractively priced and very economic. I recently picked it up from the official Google Play Store for nearly GBP 289 including VAT. Obviously you should go for the 16 GB version, just to avoid the unavailability of an external card slot from playing on your mind. If you are not a hard core gamer, the unavailability of an external card slot is certainly not going to affect you.

I have still not found a comparable phone which is still affordable. It may be a clear sign that Google is making way for the Nexus 5 to be introduced, but the Nexus 4 price drop to £159, is simply irresistible.

Nexus 4, with its limitation of in built 8 GB memory and an attractive 4.7-inch WXGA IPS display runs on Android 4.3. There is absolutely no plastic feel while gripping the phone and it is completely sturdy.  The phone even though now available at remarkable prices has a stylish rear glass surface and the front boasts of Gorilla Glass 2. Both the front and back are covered in Gorilla Glass 2, but I have still heard plenty of people complaining of cracks in the rear glass.

The 4.7-inch display is a beauty to behold, large, elaborate and the apt phone to enjoy high definition videos, certainly very eye appeasing. It is comfortably one of the most visually impressive smartphones currently available at such an affordable price. The Nexus 4 also is a notch above the Samsung Galaxy S3 in pixel per inch density at 320ppi which is only bettered by iPhone 5’s retina display which sits pretty at 326ppi.

The Nexus 4 also boasts of the 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor which makes it highly responsive.

Some of the turns off when you consider buying this phone would be as follows:

  • No extendable memory slot, which leaves you wondering whether the inbuilt 16 GB memory is sufficient for you.
  • Display sunlight is not very impressive, but it still does a very good job at adjusting the brightness to necessary levels based on its surroundings.
  • Another disappointment is the battery which is  not replaceable, considering the amount we use phones these days and the amount of recharging required
  • Camera is just average and I would definitely have appreciated it would have a shutter.
  • No LTE support

Above the screen, there is a earpiece, surrounded with sensors and 1.3 MP video call camera. The Nexus 4 comes with 8 megapixel front camera with an LED flash. HDR mode can be put to good use for outdoors for quality pictures, however please note the camera is definitely not the selling point for this phone.

One very attractive of the phone is the LED which pulses for alerts of emails, missed calls and Facebook events. There are no means to control the colurs, however there are several third party apps in Play Store available to play around with the functionality. This LED is located below the display.

The Nexus 4 boast of a 2100mAh Li-Po battery which is not meant to be replaced by the customer, which is a pain. The official battery stats assure 390 hours of stand by time and 15 hours of talk time.

Nexus 4 has a very clean audio output and is really soothing to listen with a good pair of head phones, however volumes levels are average. In short Google has provided a winner among the masses.

Micromax has never failed to beguile the markets. The Indian electronics manufacturer, with every launch, has incessantly set the bar at new levels. The Micromax A110 Superfone Canvas 2 only endorses this fact. Let us look at the Micromax A110 Superfone Canvas 2 review.

Micromax unveiled the A110 Canvas 2 Superfone in October 2012. The phone has set new standards in the budget phone market. Priced at just above 9500 as on February 2013, the phone comes with incredibly gratifying features for its price range. Let’s examine the phone’s features in detail.

First off is the screen. One of the most talked about element of the Canvas 2 is the screen. The phone comes with a stunning 5 inch screen, the first of its kind from Micromax. The phone is the enhanced version of the A100, the phone that previously allowed Micromax to make its mark in the budget phone market. The phone comes with a 262k colour display, capacitive tough screen. The phone is embedded with an IPS panel that brags a resolution of 480x854ps. A lot has been talked about the screen resolution with many critics describing the resolution to be very low with relevance to the screen size. But the display appears to be sharp, the touch is superb and the viewing angles are amazing. The phone’s display does rank low on visibility under the sun, but overall, considering the price, perfect!

Next up is the processor. The processor is a significant improvement from the older Canvas A100. The A110 comes with a dual core processor and 512 MB of RAM memory. As with the memory, the phone is embedded with an internal memory of 4GB and expandable up to 32GB.

The Canvas A110 is powered with an 8 mega-pixel camera on the rear and a 0.3 mega pixel camera in the front. This is one area where the phone hasn’t met expected standards. Though the phone is equipped with an 8 mega-pixel camera, the camera ranks low on colour and focus. Captured videos are low on quality and pictures taken in the absence of light or in the presence of low light appear unclear.  The camera is equipped with a dual LED flash and is well structured to capture photos from close range in the presence of light.

Coming to the interface, the Canvas A110 runs on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. The phone is fitted with a 2000mha amp battery that lasts about 8 hours on standby. On the whole, an amazing phone for its price.

Mobile devices like smartphones have been in the workplace since they were first introduced. Employees were initially using their own mobile devices to keep in touch with friends and family while they were at work. Things have changed, and now employees are starting to use these devices for work purposes. This is great news for companies that are looking to save money on technology expenses, but the IT department has a new challenge on their hands. They have a multitude of operating systems that are now accessing the company network.

Different mobile devices will use different operating systems. There are currently four major mobile device operating systems on the market today, and they each have their own exploits and vulnerabilities. A recent Trend Micro Technology Management article has listed these four operating systems as the following.

Apple iOS – The Apple iOS operating system powers the hugely popular Apple iPhone and iPad. Statistics show that this is the most popular mobile device operating system that is found in the workplace today. Apple has very strict control over all aspects of their hardware and software. This is helped make the operating system that powers their devices more robust, but more importantly more secure.

This is an advantage to the IT department, but there is also a disadvantage to this operating system. Apple provides regular updates to their operating system, but they don’t supply a solution to manage this operating system in the workplace. There are several third party vendors who do have mobile device management solutions for the Apple iOS.

Android – Google’s popular Android mobile operating system is now catching up to the Apple iOS in terms of users. It is estimated that within six months, the Android operating system will be the most popular operating system in the workplace.

This operating system is handled much differently than the one created by Apple. There are more known security flaws and vulnerabilities in the Android operating system. This has made it extremely challenging for workers in the IT department. Android devices can still be allowed to access information within the company network, but they should be limited to the least sensitive areas of the network.

Windows Phone – Microsoft’s addition to the mobile world is the Windows Phone. These devices use their own operating system and while they are not as prevalent in the workplace, there are still some that are showing up. Being that this operating system is still relatively new to the market and has the lowest market share, not much is known about how secure the operating system actually is. It may be a good idea to limit the usage of the Windows phone operating system until more is known about it.

Blackberry OS – Last but not least is the BlackBerry OS. The BlackBerry OS has a proven track record for being easy to manage and offering great security across even the most sensitive of company networks.

With new mobile devices appearing on the market every single day, businesses are having trouble keeping up with these devices and the security issues. Mobile device management is not going to go away. It is just going to become more important every day.
