Holly is a Christmas decoration consisting of green leaves and red berries. Holly is used in wreaths and center pieces. If holly is fresh, it gives out a pleasant scent. During holiday seasons, holly is used to decorate houses all around the world.
Holly is known to bring up the Christmas spirit during the festive season. Unlike popular belief, holly does not get its name from ‘holy’. Its origin lies mostly in Indo-European language, and it means prickly. It is also believed that Druids hung holly on windows to keep away Evil spirits.Holly is also associated with men and is known to bring good luck to men.
History of Holly
Well before holly joined the Christmas tradition, Druids considered it to be a sacred plant. Holly remained green and its colors bright, even when other plants would fade away.
Holly thus became a symbol of eternal life. Hanging holly in homes was considered to bring good luck. In present times, holly is believed to symbolize Jesus Christ in two ways. Firstly, the red berries represent the blood shed by him on the cross during his crucification. Legend states that though the berries were originally white, Jesus’ blood stained them red forever.A holly’s pointed leaves depict the crown of thorns placed on Jesus’ head before he died on the cross.
There are many other traditions to holly. Some say that the cross on which Jesus was crucified was made of holly.
How to make sure your holly lasts the festive season:
1) You can either buy holly from a garden store, or cut some holly off the bush yourself
2) If you want to keep holly fresh, spray it with fire-resistant spray which is available at garden stores.
3) Holly should be placed somewhere where it will not receive direct sunlight. You should also consider that the spot is away from direct heat.
4) Remove any brittle leaves and berries which dry out due to de-hydration
