6 features that made me stick to Opera Browser!
Its been years since I ditched IE for Opera and there are several reasons for it. Opera is a web browser and Internet suite developed by Opera Software. It was what introduced me to the world of tabbed browsing, password management, mouse gestures, speed dials and tons of more feautures. Here are some details on the features which made me an Opera fan..
1 ) Mouse Gestures:
This is my fav feature of Opera. Mouse gestures are simple mouse movements done while a mouse button is kept clicked. The mouse can be used for a lot more than just clicking links, including powerful mouse gestures and flexible drag-and-drop operations. Check out a few sample gestures. The close tab and open new tab gestures are the ones I use the most.
2) Password manager:
Opera has great password manager. It prompts you to save a password everyone you enter a username and pass at any site. You can later click on the Wand button to autologin or use Ctrl + Enter.Incase you have multiple accounts on the same site, opera prompts you for which username to use for login.
3) Speed dial
Along with bookmarks, Opera has Speed dial which lets you arrange your most accessed links. Speed Dial gives you quick access to your favorite Web sites. Every time a new tab is opened, you are presented with a 3×3 grid of thumbnails, each representing a Web address. To open a page, click on the corresponding thumbnail, or use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + [1-9].
4) Integrated Search Bar.
Opera simplified searching by providing an inbuilt search section which allows you to search in Google, Amazon, Yahoo, Ebay, Wikipedia etc.Type a query and hit enter and your search is done!
4) Trash Can:
How many times has it been that you closed a tab by mistake? You’d have to check the browser history to get back the URL of the last page. However Opera has a trash can features which lists the recently closed tabs , thereby enabling you to easily get back to your closed tabs. Trash can button, allows the user to retrieve blocked pop-ups or a tab closed earlier in the same session. A tab restored from the “trash can” retains its original settings as well as text field entries. You can clear the trash can if it gets cluttered.
5) Auto-completion of URLs
The very first reason I jumped was due to the autocompletion of URLs in the address bar.Traditionally you’d be required to type the full site name like www.google.com or type google and press Shift+Enter in IE.However, all you had to type in Opera was google and press enter and it would put in the www and the .com itself.Made browsing so much easier.
6) Tabbed Browsing
Another hot debate is about tabbed browsing.Tabbed browsing is NOT an Opera or a Firefox invention. It was created by a browser ‘NetCaptor’ .However I was introduced to it through Opera .Chrome did not exist then and Firefox was new.Tabbed browsing made browsing more manageable.I cant imagine dealing with multiple browsing windows now! So much clutter!! In opera, just click on new tab and open another site, as simple as that.
These are features that Opera has kinda benchmarked for me. I shall always look for these features in a browser. Ironical, but quite recently opera has been giving me problems and freezes. So I’ve moved on the Chrome for the timebeing. And what was the first thing I did after getting Chrome?? I installed extensions to make it Opera-Like ![]()
