A brief opinion on Orkut v/s Facebook

Social networking is perhaps what these times will be known for. The two biggest names in social network are undoubtedly Orkut and Facebook. However even though Orkut worked quite well initially, it saw a decline to the rise of Facebook which is now as everyone the biggest social experience ever made.
It was a few years ago, that I got an Orkut invite. Having never heard the term ‘Social Networking’, I never paid any attention to it. After a few days, I started getting invites every day. I still did not join it. Then people started talking about it and I thought, its time I have a look at it. So I registered for Orkut account. Social networking was very new to me. And Orkut’s rise was faster than I had imagined. I remember the craze people had for scraps and friend lists. However it didn’t last very long.
Now there is one thing that differentiates Orkut and Facebook. Orkut in my opinion is much more personal whereas Facebook is a more public. What I mean is, in Orkut the things visible to you on your homepage were your profile details and your scrapbook, which contain only the scraps directed towards you. If you had to find out what was going on with other people, you’d have to visit their profiles and check their scrapbooks to see what they’re up to. Then again you couldn’t see conversations easily since scrapbooks only store the messages directed towards the owner and not the one written by him/her. Overall , a cumbersome process to sneak on conversations. So unless you chat over the scrapbook every day, you wouldn’t have anything to do in Orkut other than wait for people to scrap on your book. That is where Orkut lost the battle.
Facebook on the other hand has a wall which directly tells you what your
friends have on their mind, who has uploaded which pics, who has taken which quizzes etc. In short, the Facebook experience involves more people rather than just you.So you have something to read everything you refresh your wall. That is where Facebook scored. Also Facebook is much simpler for group interaction. Example: Commenting on status, photos etc.
There were some features of Orkut that I really liked. I think people like you know what everyone else thinks about them. And that is the reason why people liked testimonials. It was fun knowing what your friends think about you.Another feature was the ratings section. Ratings were for coolness & sexiness. This is the point which Facebook still lacks – ratings!
On a final note , I liked Orkut and I like Facebook. However I thinkg, integrating some features of Orkut into Facebook would make the latter a little better [ Atleast for me!]
