Apple to allow app rentals?

According to recent findings, inside the BETA release for iTunes 10.5 comes a code that hints directly at the future ability for users to rent applications instead of purchasing them. The findings were revealed by @SonnyDickson

This would simply let developers allow rentals of their applications and thus open up a new window for revenue. Currently only paid and free apps exist. This could perhaps be the start of another revolution in app developing. However, it is also possible that this could be just another way of trying apps out before purchase?

This would be great for those who would like to use an expensive application, such as a turn-by-turn navigation app, but would rather not pay for the entire thing just to use it a time or two every now and again.

Twitter user and iPhone developer SonnyDickson appears to have found is a set of five simple codes. The codes look like pop-up messages that would appear to inform you about the status of the app being rented. “Apps are automatically removed from your iTunes library at the end of the rental period,” reads one note. Another says “This app will be deleted from your computer.”

There are a few potential benefits of an app rental program. In case you don’t want to buy an application but just want to try it for a brief period of time, the rental feature is quite useful. For example, you were traveling to another India and you wanted a English-Hindi dictionary. Rather than pay $9.99 or more to buy an app like this, you could pay a small fee to have it on your phone for the time you need it. The rental feature also allows the possibility of trying out an app before you decided to buy it as stated before.

App rentals could be a boon for developers. Developers often complain about the App Store’s lack of demo apps. For example, a developer selling a $10 app could “rent” that same app for $1 for 24 hours in hopes of converting the user to the full version. At least they’d be able to capture $1 for the rental.

Frequently, apps are too expensive for how many times you end up using them. For example, you’ve got a unique situation in which you need to edit some video, but you never plan on doing the same thing again? Application rentals sound like the perfect thing..
