Using phone GPRS on PC/Laptop using Bluetooth
Its been quite a while since I got moved to Pune from my home city Mumbai. And I’ve recently purchased a Netbook for use at my almost empty Pune apartment.Internet is a necessity and so I decided to look at portable internet devices.
TATA Photon is the first thing that comes to mind when you talk about portable internet.Convenient and fast as I’ve heard.BUT the biggest question of them all..is it cheap? The catalogue on the site says the connection costs Rs 1800 and minimum usage plan is 250 bucks for 250 mb

Knowing the kind of internet user I am, 2 GB is the minimum I’d require if I decided to browse and download
750 bucks a month seems a little hard of the pocket with my salary and expenses. But life is gonna be boring without internet there I thought. And then it occurred to me, there is a better, cheaper and more convenient option. Using my cell phone GPRS on my PC using the cell as a Bluetooth modem!. Its not as complicated as it sounds. However I thought, I’d write an article on it.
So,
Things you need,
1) A phone with GPRS support
2) A GPRS plan with unlimited usage [ or whatever is in budget]
3) A Bluetooth Dongle or a Bluetooth enable laptop [you can also use the phone cable is you have one.Skip the bluetooth steps then ]
4) Nokia PC Suite [assuming you are using a Nokia Phone]
5) A sofa to relax and a coffee table to hold snacks and drinks as you enjoy browsing
[ Optional!! ]
Step1) Install Nokia PC Suite for your phone.
Step2) Install a Bluetooth driver for your Bluetooth Dongle if using one.
Step3) Switch on cell phone Bluetooth and make visibility as “Show to all”
Step 4) Make sure PC Suite detects your phone.Else goto the connection wizard in PC Suite and setup a Bluetooth connection. Click on the ‘Connect to internet’ button in PC Suite.
Step 5) Click on the configure button.
Step 6) Select your phone and click next.
Step 7) Select your service provider from the drop down. Its Airtel India in my case.Click on the green tick button. You’re done with configuration.
Step
Click on connect to internet again and click the connect button.
Step 9) You can click on the notification area in your task bar to see your connection.
Follow these steps to create a quicker way to connect.
Step 10 ) Goto ‘Network Connections’ in Network and Sharing Centre in Control Panel. Right click and create a shortcut on your desktop. You can now use the shortcut on the desktop to connect to the internet directly without using PC Suite again
Step 11) You can also click on the notification area and select your phone modem and click connect.
Step 12) The dial up window should popup. Click on dial
Step 13) Enjoy!!
Your phone Connection Manager should show something like this now..
