It is the year which takes the tally to 60, 60 years on the throne for the Queen of England. Celebrations are constantly erupting across the country, however the main celebrations are targeted for June 2nd, 3rd,4th and 5th which is also a long weekend (2nd-Saturday to 5th Tuesday). So get planning to make the best use of the weekend.
Before we start celebrating I think it will be obligatory to know what we are celebrating and its significance. The Queen’s reign all began on 6 February 1952 ( her coronation took place on 2 June 1953). Preceding this celebration was the Silver Jubilee in 1977 and the Golden Jubilee in 2002.
Elizabeth was the first child of Prince Albert, Duke of York who then went on to become King George VI after his elder brother Edward was abdicated from the throne. This entire episode is best shown in the movie “The King’s Speech”. King George VI also happened to be the last Emperor of India. The reign all started in early 1952, when Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh had then set out for a tour of Australia and New Zealand via Kenya. On 6 February 1952, when they returned to their Kenyan home, Sagana Lodge, the news arrived of the death of Elizabeth’s father. The Queen’s husband Philip broke the news to the new queen. When Martin Charteris, her private secretary asked the Queen to choose a regnal (formal) name; she decided to retain Elizabeth.
Right until this day Elizabeth II is the constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states, also known as the Commonwealth realms and they are as follows,
- Antigua and Barbuda
- The Bahamas
- New Zealand
- New Guinea
- Saint Kitts and Nevis Saint Lucia
- Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
- Solomon Islands
- United Kingdom
This is second longest run for a British monarch, and her majesty has seen it all.
